Social Media banner

The first thing the users see when they arrived at your social media page is the profile and the banner image. Therefore what image you have uploaded will give the users the 1st impression of who you might be or what are you promoting.

Since more users owned a mobile device, making sure that the image work perfectly on both desktop and mobile devices becomes very important. It gives them the best possible 1st impression of you.

Let’s start working on Facebook banner before moving on to Linkedin and Twitter.

Banner size for Facebook

Do you know according to Facebook guidelines, the banner for the Facebook page displays on desktop is 820px by 312px and 640px by 360px for mobile. While the profile image displays on desktop is 180px by 180px and 128px by 128px for mobile.

Since we can upload only one image, how can you make the image look perfectly display on both desktop and mobile devices? Today I will show how you can do that and at the end of this article, I will provide a link to download photoshop file I have prepared.

Designing banner for the Facebook profile page

As mention earlier, the banner size which displays on desktop is 820px by 312px while on mobile is 640px by 360px. So what size should you create then? I recommend you create a banner size of 820px by 312px and align all the important content at the center so we do not need to create any other custom size random by other blogs. For the profile page, there is a profile icon that will take up space in the banner and you have to cater to it too.

The banner below shows you which area of the banner is visible on desktop and mobile view. So we can avoid placing any important image or text in the area.

Designing banner for the Facebook Page

I will use the same size as above, 820px by 312px. But this time around, I do not need to worry about the profile image blocking the banner but it doesn’t.

The banner below shows you which area of the banner is visible on desktop and mobile view. So you can avoid placing any important image or text in the area.

Twitter

The funny thing about twitter official guidelines states that the header photo size is 1500px by 500 px but when you upload the image, parts of the image will still be cropped. It is weird and ridiculous that they provided the dimension in the official guide and still crop the image.

The problem does not end here, if you resize your browser, the banner will auto resize accordingly and some parts of the banner will “appear” and “reappear”.

So to play it safe and do it just once, I recommend you still create a banner size of 1500px by 500px and align all the important content in the safe zone so it can be safely viewed on desktop and mobile.

The banner below shows you which area of the banner is been blocked in desktop and mobile view. So you can avoid placing any important image or text in the area.

Linkedin

The official banner size is 1584px by 396px. Do you need to change your profile banner? Personally for me is no, because after you create a design that fits for desktop view, it is totally not viewable in mobile as space is limited. I will show you why it this so.
